A Magical visit to Wasini Island – A Day in Paradise
Our day started with the promise of adventure as we left our hotel in Diana early in the morning. We headed south, past lush palm groves and coastal villages, toward the serene shores of Shimoni, the jump-off point to the magical Wasini Island.
At the Shimoni harbor, we boarded a traditional wooden boat—and set off into the calm waters of the Indian Ocean. The sea sparkled like a sheet of glass, and the salty wind teased our hair as we sailed. It wasn’t long before the ocean gave us a magical surprise: a group of dolphins began leaping beside our boat! We screamed with joy, trying to snap photos but mostly just soaking up the rare moment.
Next stop: Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is a stunning marine sanctuary off Kenya’s southern coast, near Shimoni and Wasini Island, best known as one of Kenya’s best snorkeling spots. The underwater world was breathtaking—swirling schools of fish, vibrant coral reefs, and even a graceful sea turtle drifting by. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just floating with a life vest and mask, the clarity and beauty down below is absolutely unforgettable.
After working up an appetite in the water, we sailed to Wasini Island itself. Stepping onto the island felt like entering another world. There are no cars, no roads—just coral footpaths, quiet homes, and the sound of the waves. We were greeted by smiling locals and guided through the fossil coral gardens and mangrove boardwalk, where the views of the sea and the surrounding nature were truly postcard-worthy!!!!.
Lunch was served seaside at a small local restaurant—and what a feast it was! Freshly caught seafood grilled to perfection, coconut rice, Swahili chapatis, and the most delish seaweed I ever tasted! The flavors were as vibrant as the view. We sat under shade with our toes in the sand, watching fishing boats bob on the horizon.
Before leaving, we took a slow walk through the village and visited a local women’s cooperative where beautiful handmade crafts were being created from seashells and beads. Supporting them felt like a perfect way to give back to the place that had welcomed us so warmly.
As the sun dipped toward the ocean, casting the sky in golden pinks and purples, we boarded our boat for the return journey. The water rocked us gently, and silence fell over our group—everyone lost in their thoughts, smiles lingering from a perfect day.
Wasini Island wasn’t just a destination. It was a peaceful escape, a cultural encounter, and a full sensory adventure rolled into one. We left with full hearts, sun-kissed skin, and stories we’ll be telling for a long time to come.
