My Honest Opinion on Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant in Diani-Mombasa

During our usual Kenya (Home) visit in June 2021, we were vacationing in Diani-South Coast, with my sister Teresa, her daughter Jill and my son Jay.  One evening, we decide to go check out the famous Ali Barbour Cave Restaurant.

Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant is hidden behind a modest whitewashed facade along Diana Beach Road.   Diners have to descend some 33 feet (≈10 m) via stone‑carved steps into a system of interlinked coral chambers with an open skylight overhead.  A Natural skylight in the cave ceiling provides a dramatic view of the sky and stars.  It’s estimated to be 120,000–180,000 years old.

The main dining chamber features rugged walls softly illuminated by candlelight and lanterns, creating a cozy, acoustic atmosphere under the stars—or under the protective retractable roof in case of rain.

The restaurant provides complimentary hotel transfers in Diani which is cool!!!     Smart casual attire is required.  No swimwear permitted.   Also, young children (under 6 years) are not permitted.

The menu offers an international flair with a strong seafood emphasis sourced locally—from oysters and crab bisque to prawns, yellowfin tuna carpaccio, and sumptuous lobster platters

My Honest Opinion:

  • Atmosphere lives up to the hype. The moment you walk down the staircase into the lantern-lit cave, you feel immersed in something otherworldly — rough coral walls, open skylight, soft Arabic/Swahili décor.

  • Stargazing setting is the top highlight — the natural hole lets in moonlit and starlit skies each evening, creating a dreamy backdrop.

  • Go for: an unforgettable romantic night or special occasion—dining inside a prehistoric coral cave under the stars is genuinely unique.

  • Ideal for:  Romantic dinners, celebrations, and immersive dinning under the stars with high-end seafood and theatrical flair.
  • Pricing:  Dinner pricing per person are premium for Diani Beach.  It typically ranges from US $26-$70.  Drinks are extra, and quite expensive.

  • high-end seafood, theatrical presentations, a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and professional service.
